i think the most common mistake is overthinking it. too many bands these days are contriving their vocal theatrics.
showing emotion isn't powerful when done ad nauseum. takes away from the more tender moments.

Upon listening closely to Beau Navires vocal styling I have figured out the perfect method to sound exactly like them. The directions are:

You put your right hand in, You put your right hand out, You put your right hand in, And you shake it all about, You do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around. Thats what it's all about.

dont worry about what you sound like too much. there shouldn't really be a technique for screaming unless you're in a breakdown band like i see stars. as long as you're passionate about what you're saying, it shouldnt matter what you sound like.

Yeah I mean who would even care if you sounded like crap. As long as you're passionate about it you could bang on a pickle bucket and fart into a microphone and it won't matter. I mean what is music man ... like sound and stuff... what is art . It's like really deep duuuuuuuude.

If someone is passoniate and really finds emotion in banging on a pickle bucket and farting into a microphone, I say go for it.

I was mostly talking about vocalists.
