he was just that "hey everyone look at me" guy. talked really loud, insulted everyone, had to be the center of attention at all times... just all around dick posturing. this was at the height of the sass bullshit, so the show was just so miserable to sit through.

i didn't really hear that word coined until about 2002 (as mr. bigman stated above). in 1999 we mostly just coined the phrase "wow, that guy is a fucking tool, i wish he would stop talking".

Yeah, sass was a real term, but I wouldn't say it was used in such a manner. It was more an extremely brief trend in the early millennios. Bands like Blood Brothers, The Plot to Blow Up The Eiffel Tower, and pretty much anything Sound Virus put out. Basically just a lot of attitude, keyboards, androgynous Asian band members, and explicit homoeroticism. See this post for reference:

Call it Diamond Dust Shoes and have the cover be a guy's coke covered face with spit chains leading to what can only be assumed to be an off camera penis.

A lot of these bands were made up mostly of art students, which sort of implies they crave attention, and a lot of their antics were specifically done to make people feel as uncomfortable as possible, but you could just be a dick independent of all of this. Take a band like Clockcleaner for example, their whole act was basically being a bunch of try-hard dicks, but they sounded like a watered down Ink & Dagger.
