I get what you're saying and that's what I meant when I said representing the times. I should have went into a little more detail there, but oh well haha I just hope the younger kids starting bands don't get sucked into writing "pity me" lyrics because of all the trends and cliches that are associated with this genre. Especially that bullshit "sad" this and "sad" that trend that I've seen around. Fuck that and if you dig or go along with that trend, fuck you.CitizenOfUlysses wrote:Definitely agree with this, lyrics about girls are overdone even if they are a staple of the skramo world.Though I do appreciate lyrics about feels in general, just not as much as stuff that's kind of relevant. Not just political stuff, but about how people live in this day and age and stuff like that. Would be pretty cool, know?plasticsmilerecords wrote:There's one more thing before I shut up, I wish more bands wrote lyrics that represented the times instead of the bullshit self loathing lyrics about why no one wants to touch their dick. We have the opportunity to share and spread messages about how we can change ourselves and the world for the better, so why waste time writing junk lyrics? Take advantage of being in front of a group of people who have no choice but to listen to you!!!

Re: how skramz should sound
why is being sad a trend? that shit is SOOOOOO not fun.
IMO the skramz needs real screams and it has to be DIY.
The music has to have some level of intensity/emotion to it.
Lyrics can be about anything as long as they are true and coming from the heart, no matter how you put em. I understand wanting to say something "important" if you have everyone's attention, but for me it's really just about expressing my feels and views and not giving a fuck if people like it or not. its screamo.

I agree with that too. The passion has to be there or else what's the point?riderofbrohan wrote:why is being sad a trend? that shit is SOOOOOO not fun.

always thought the "sad" thing was just a parody of the misconception that screamo is just about bad vibes
don't sweat my skram

It should sound like whoever is playing it is actually feeling something. Lyrics don't have to have real purpose but conveying some sort of emotion is what embodies sKrAmZ for me. Sad, happy, pissed, unstable so on and so forth. Or maybe just partying. Something that you can hear the earnestness is. Does this make me sound like an asshole? I'm an emotional vampire. Empathy is pretty much a drug for me. I love hearing the ache in someones voice. Like its so real you feel it too. That's what I love about this shit.

pg.99, honeywell, navio forge, closure, breakwater.. so far I have not heard any current bands re-visiting this original sound except maybe slightly in daitro but i feel that they have alot of modern hardcore influence.. to me it seems current bands are nailing the dreamy kind of intrumental pickings, nice atmospheric bits, but I havnt heard much in the way of really chaotic/blast bits.. is this because of the recent rise in thrash/crust? Im not sure
Re: how skramz should sound
this is aside from bands that have members of legitimate bands of the past
Re: how skramz should sound
in 1996, when i was 17 i started a band that i thought sounded like converge, endeavor and reach out. we would play shows with saetia, closure, i robot, etc. you have to understand, back then there were heavy bands and there were emo bands and it was unusual for anyone to really mix the two into one song. more or less that's what those bands were doing. a year after we broke up people started telling me that i had been in a "monumental screamo band". i had no idea what this label meant and figured this was a new way for people to categorize emo bands that had more screaming.
by the early 2000s when the white belt explosion took place and jerome's dream, orchid and all those bands were huge i was told that this new crop of bands were "screamo" as well. i didn't see many similarities between these bands and my old/current band so i was baffled as to how the label was being applied so liberally to a myriad of bands. with all these differences, it seemed there had to be something more than just the sound of the music that was defining all this.
as someone said earlier, if you put closure and jerome's dream side by side, there's a huge difference in the tempo, melodics and overall attack of the music. however they share similarities in their approach to creating aggressive music that appealed to a more introspective sensibility. it was also, for lack of better term, totally nestled in a DIY approach.

I'm sure many of you will disagree and that's perfectly fine because we all have different views on everything.
I defiantly agree with this. A lot of bands nowadays have a very limited subject matter when it comes to their lyrics. I love bands that have a more political/sociological view in there songs, it shows someone is paying attention to something and that they care enough about to share. I personally have written and used lyrics in bands that were more about lack of relationships, being betrayed, grieving over past friends etc.. kinda typical stuff for this genre. Recently Ive been jamming with some dudes, starting another screamo band yall look out now, and the lyrics Ive been writing for that have defiantly been beyond "me". Defiantly more about current affaires and i suppose more pressing issues than crying over my wiener not gettin looked at or whatever.
Personally, Im not a fan of the word "skram" or any other nicknames. I feel its hard enough to tell people that I listen to screamo (ive learned to just say hardcore punk now, especially on dates...) and dont want another sub sub genre to explain as well. I'm not that old (22) and when I hear people call neil perry or you and i 'skramz' it really makes my blood curdle. I understand its just a silly pet name but I hear it and see it some much now, i guess it just really gets to me lol.
I think a good screamo band has nice heavy and melodic parts with tons of passion and eyes full of tears, hearts even lower. a band that can make you feel, take you away to a place you much needed to go to. something like that.
love yourself, no one else will
