BASS!
At least think I'm the drummer, come on.
I was referring to the part in the one song where the vocalist yells BASS! before a bass break. It's hilarious. How awesome is their split with ROCK BOTTOM gonna be?

GO AHEAD AND TRY TO STOP THIS STRAIGHT EDGE YOUTH, OWW!

I'm stoked on the split. I haven't seen those dudes in a while. I need to get back to Milwaukee. I remember their first show. So cute.

brianutatx wrote: This is exactly how it started. This is what the song Straight Edge is about. Ian Mackaye was tried of drunk/high assholes at shows.

When I saw Ian Mackaye speak at a lecture a couple of years ago he spoke on the topic of straight edge. He said that to him drinking beer and smoking cigarettes was something he always saw adults doing and as a teenager growing up he wanted to try and be as far removed from typical american adult culture, continuing to live life free of drugs/drinking was a way for him to maintain more parts of what it is to be a child. It was for him also an individualist choice one that promotes freedom of choice. He would go to shows and everyone would be drinking, etc. but he wanted to say "hey I have a right to be here to, but I don't have to take part in that practice" alot of punks in the DC scene gave him and his group of friends alot of shit for not drinking/smoking. So straight edge is an extension of the punk idea of individuality and freedom.

I think choosing to not drink/smoke/do drugs makes you somewhat of an outcast in society, it's another way of stickin it to the man, and saying "fuck your culture" it's similar to being vegan/vegetarian.

My main complaint with straight edge is that Ian was practicing clean livin and sayin fuck you to the man, whereas the youth crew style sxe crews were doing the opposite, they preached uniformity and togetherness, fuck all that. I'm in this on my own I don't want to be categorized with a bunch of anti-individualistic mosh crew sxe bros, fuck the jock club that sxe has become. I feel more at home chillin with my friends that smoke weed than hangin with sxe jocks who eat steaks and talk about football.
Well said, you and I see straightedge the same way.

Not really a screamo band as much as an old school emo band, but everyone in Mouse Ear are both straightedge and vegan. Double nerd points.

this is like the antithesis of my life.

hahahaha, there's this girl in my two of my classes that wears a focusedxminds crew all the time. she fits into the jock sxe thing really hard. we have a large jock edge community here. her and all her friends we're on the football team and we're cheerleaders then decided to listen to have heart last year and start bands. some of these kids are always talking about all the punk bands they know and how they're part of a strong edge community on their facebooks all the time. sad that the only girl around here that likes emo decides to date these guys.
