Has anyone here ever tried making a children's book?

Real talk. How did you go about this? I've been meaning to do this since a few years ago but never got around writing a story for it on account of my writing being depressing as fuck. I draw things though. Anyone in here ever think of doing the same thing?

Kids would feel super depressed after reading your story, Lord Gloom. :|

when I was a kid I got this book where the main character had my name, and all of the other characters had the names of family members. AND WE WERE DINOSAURS.

i never did, but my friend did. or maybe it was his aunt or something. maybe him and the author just have the same last name. either way i read it. its about a snail who wasn't allowed to smoke his pipe indoors, he lived in a hole underground. this snail has legs btw. he looks like a gray person pretty much, with some weird shrek ear lookin things on his forehead. maybe he wasn't a snail. not sure. anyhoo, he goes outside to smoke his pipe. then he caught the world on fire. the end

Indeed. In fact they hate reading, they'd rather play with their PSP's and gameboys, with an attention-span of a freaking fruit fly.
Most of my students are like that. So frustrating it makes me wanna burn their parents every time.

Writing a children's book is something I've definitely been meaning to do for a while. All you really need is connecting ideas (drawings, plot, moral of the story), which unfortunately I have not done yet because I lack ideas that mesh well together (my drawings never fit the kind of story I want to tell). Basically, in writing the story, think about your future children. What kind of stories would you like to tell them? What stories affected you as a child that you could draw inspiration from? Maybe even make it subtly personal.

yeah depends what kinda book... like simple one sentence per page with drawings or something more complicated?
look at your drawings... the nondepressing ones... something furry/cuddly/cute?

step one is you gotta get an idea. maybe comes from the characters, maybe its just a silly story. but we GOTTA love the characters! the market is probably too saturated, you gotta have something to stand out somehow eh?

think of why you wanna write it?
what's the message you want to get across? it's for kids, it has to "say" something. usually a "lesson" abt life or something

plot out the pages. your english teacher probably kept telling you "do an outline" or whatever; anyway, it DOES work and makes things easier once you go to do it to know what it is you're gonna DO! :P

yeah, probably basically the start. if you actually get to doing it you'll consider stuff like page size/how you make your drawings etc.
