Not just in screamo, etc.
But the band/artist that set you on the path.
For me, it was Linkin Park. I was all about that shit in 4th grade.
Hybrid Theory was my jam.

Taking BackSunday's Tell All Your Friends
When I first heard this back in 2002 too, I thought it was the most amazing thing I've ever head. Then I started listening to related bands and found a lot of great stuff.
I still listen to this album and love it.

=/ This is tough I like so many different music genres its hard to pick one gateway. I'll pick one for each.
Metal- Agalloch's album Ashes Against the Grain changed my life.
Screamo- Either Dance Gavin Dance or Boys Night Out. (this is the very first exposure for me. For good screamo it was Orchid's Chaos is me)
Indie- Minus The Bear's album Highly Refined Pirates still is in my top 20 albums of all time.
Post-Rock- Red Sparrows everything they touch is magic I cant pick an album.
Shoegaze- Slowdive (...its shoegaze)
Emo- Brand New (I love this band and always will)
Hip-Hop- A Tribe Called Quest (Low End Theory is perfection.)

jawbox. while i listened to mainstream music when i was a kid like pearl jam nirvana and soundgarden(all of which i still enjoy to an extent) but when i saw the video for savory one night on mtv it was surreal. on the fyoss album, there was an address to contact the band so i did to tell them i appreciate the music. they were nice enough to send me a couple of catalogs for desoto and dischord records. i had to get everythign from catalogs because i lived in the middle of nowhere. life sucked before the internet.
jawbox was the first band like that but the first song that ever just blew my mind was malpractice by faith no more.

American Football and Dashboard Confessional
My older cousin listened to American Football's s/t over and over one Christmas that I was over there, which influenced me to start playing the trumpet in fourth grade. They were the first band I listened to outside of what my parents listened to, which was mainly radio country (which I still listen to of course).
In eighth grade, I would go up to the high school after school for football workouts. My older brother was friends with this guy who would give me a ride afterwards. He listened to Places and AMAMABAS in his car all the time, and I got really into it.
I don't remember how I got into screamo. Probably some random post recommending some random band on some random forum back in the day.
