The term "essential" is always going to be subjective. The idea of even the small amount of people on this board coming to a consensus of what should fit this bill is close to impossible.

But to pose a question....is "essential" going to always be something you like personally? For example there a lot of bands on the original list that I just simply cannot stand, though, I see their historical significance in regards to the genre and therefore understand why they might be considered "essential" by some.
