itt: man the fuck up

Post by imawizard3 »

what's up guys. clearly there is some fucked up shit going on in our corner of the music world. we have like 500 different types of music labeling themselves as like 5 different words. skramz. emo. screamo. math and all the rest.

the last thing we want to do is put a label on what cannot be labeled: music and everything that word stands for. but we need accurate words for differing types of hardcore music. i think its cool when you see a band on bandcamp and their only tag is "rock" yet they play some raw passionate mixture of punk and screamo. but ive never gone to the rock tag on bandcamp and browsed through every "rock" band until i found a cool screamo band. i doubt many of you have either.

lets get a discussion going on different styles of the hardcore music we enjoy. let's discuss creative and cool terms we can use for them and different ways we can try implementing this standard.

I view genre tags as a necessity because they give a more clear depiction of what you're about to listen to. Tagging something as rock literally means I am about to listen to anything driven by guitars.

in the 90's we just called everything "hardcore". within that, sure, there were sub-labels but everything fell under the same umbrella. of course, back then it wasn't uncommon to see shows that had much more variety in terms of bands.

i often wonder if the specific genre labeling (while informative and detailed) has anything to do with how genre-specific shows have gotten.

I hate VURR b/c chewing with your mouth open is disgusting and I only listen to bands that have proper table manners and/or consume only liquids and foods like grapes or yogurt or mashed potatoes or macaroni that require little to no chewing because ew.

the true test of a real music fan is if they can accurately describe what genre the music is

I've been trying to book shows with a larger spread of sub-genres. I have been booking metal bands with hardcore and screamo and fastcore. It seems like more people end up coming out and most people stick around to watch all the bands. I feel like when I'm booking a show I want it to be a good time, sometimes its a bit stale if there are 5 screamo bands on a show or 5 fastcore bands, I know I get kinda bored.

It really sucks that shows arent more diverse anymore. My last band couldnt get booked on shows cause all the promoters were like "Your good but theres no one to put you on with". I dont care who we play with. Id rather play a show with Hardcore/Metal/Pop-Punk then a all out Skramz shows. Your never gonna find new fans if your playing to the same 10 people all the time.
