it depends on just how norm the norms are. really norm norms don't get shoegaze, dnb, free jazz, or even listening to classical music any more than they do skramz. usually I don't use words like skramz/screamo/skram afk though, LOL.

usually I'll just send them a link to iwrotehaikus or ssre on youtube or something.

I say Hardcore or punk most of the time.

I then try and mention the bigger hardcore bands like Converge and Poison the Well then I add "Like that except a lot faster"

depends how normie they are, if I think they will literally know nothing about alternative music, I'll just say I like "heavy" music

If I think they might be somewhat aware I'll just say punk/hc/metal

pic loosely related

Even describing emoviolence to hardcore punk people is difficult:

"it's a bit like grind/pv but played with an emotive hardcore persuasion"
or
"it's emotive hardcore with blast beats
"no, it's not like 'that' emo"
"no, it's not screamo, it's skramz"
"yes but if you look closer we're musically related so let's play gigs together you POS!"

That's almost exactly how I describe it. "Pretty music with shrieking".
