back when i did cmhwak, i had a lot of info on stuff from japan but all the bands have really blurred together now. im not too great on remembering where bands are from. i used to have this great website with a LOT of links to bands and labels from there. if i feel like it, ill go browse around and see if i can find it.

i dont remember which member but i used to talk to this guy from cease upon the capitol sometimes and he knew a lot of stuff about it. im not sure why exactly but he was very close knit to that scene in the midish 00s.

actually, just browsing over that myspace, i remember "ive come from your children" records being from japan(i think). thatll probably have some good info http://www.icfycrecords.com/newcatalog/

back in the day, i spent weeks going through sites from japan. i couldnt read any of it but i was able to find links to music and then id go to all the links in their links. they all seemed to be really tight but did not have any kind of interaction with the broader community so very faw people know about some great bands.

heaven in her arms is a good one. just put out a new album, which i haven't given enough attention to provide a solid description. they have a demo from '04 which is more straightforward screamo with metallic influences, an lp from '07 which has a lot of post-rock influence; could be compared to a more metallic envy with high-pitched vocals. they put out an ep in '09 which is imo their most mature work, its really atmospheric and gloomy. i'd start with that probably.

killie's another one; they've done a split with heaven in her arms as well as off minor. this full length they put out in '08 had a lot of spoken word and ambience, even some electronics, interspersed with angry hardcore passages. if you're down with experimental shit you might enjoy that. they have some other releases (aforementioned splits, some eps) that are shorter and not as focused on ambience/spoken word. dunno if they've done anything since 08 or if they're even together anymore.

heaven in her arms owns all. these guys are good at playing their instruments. put on their music, close your eyes and listen. you'll have a music orgasm.

1000 travels are good, but the vocals can be annoying sometimes. as for envy...i'm tired of them.

I have a love-hate relationship with HIHA since I like them better sans the screaming and with just the spoken words. The vocals can get annoying sometimes. But sound-wise, I couldn't argue with that. The lyrics are beautifully written too. Envy will always be a staple jap skramo in my playlist, pre-Insomniac Doze, that is.
