But the band/artist that set you on the path.

For me, it was Linkin Park. I was all about that shit in 4th grade.
Hybrid Theory was my jam.
SAME EXACT THING! Saw the video of "One Step Closer" and I was instantly hooked on this form of guitar-driven music.

Then In Flames was my gateway to metal, then Envy was gateway to screamo, etc.

Taking Back Sunday - Tell All Your Friends, and bands on Victory like that, but mostly that album, in second grade, that's what just got me into rock n roll.
eventually in 4th grade i got a silverstein cd that said something about the get up kids, so i listened to them for a bit. but not much :/ also ska punk.
6th grade i saw my friends band yay! yay! fun club. i looked at their myspace and checked out what was in the influences.
i first found circle takes the square, didn't like the vocals, so i checked out rites of spring, moss icon, love like... electrocution, orchid, Jeromes Dream, Portrait, loma prieta, iwouldetc. and now i'm into screamo...

10 years old - Metallica (Master of Puppets) but I never had a follow up on metal again until 13-14.
11-13 years old - I got into Linkin Park but then I found Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, and Dashboard Confessionals. Didn't have a faggy "emo" phase though. I used to skate so my friends got me into Rancid, AAA, and some ska punk stuff.
13-14 years old - I came across Cradle of Filth and I had a fag-goth phase.
15-17 - Then I got into hardcore tough guy stuff (Hatebreed, Agnostic Front, Throwdown), metalcore (Killswitch Engage, August Burns Red etc.), I had a deathcore phase too. . .
17-present - I eventually got tired of chug chug bands when I found skramz through Orchid, Funeral Diner, Neil Perry, and La Quiete...gave me enough motivation to be in a skramo band.

I don't think I have one gateway band. here's the whole story:

in the '90s I used to watch MTV and VH1. there I found bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Led Zeppelin and other rock bands. I also got my brother's Radiohead and Offspring CDs around that time. from rock I went on to metal during the early '00s, my favourites being mostly black metal bands. both in the '90s and in the early '00s I knew what punk was and I listened to some of the most popular bands (I especially listened to a lot of Ebba Grön), but I didn't have a particular punk phase.

when I began to use the internet for sensible stuff, I somehow learned about Minor Threat. after that, I got into hardcore and found out about a lot of punk, metal and rock bands and I was in heaven because before that, learning about new bands only happened through TV, radio and other people - and I didn't know a lot of people with a similar taste in music as me. then I met a guy (poster alexander) who introduced me to Mineral. after that, finding emo and screamo was easy and I fell in love instantly. the band that really made me realise how awesome screamo is, was City of Caterpillar.
I sort of have nothing to say and if I did, I'd say nothing at all.

Atari Teenage Riot, Blur, Oasis, old Silverchair and Nirvana when I was younger. Like when I was eight. Suede too, let's not forget Suede. As for loud music, I guess I got into Napalm Death or Carcass when I was 14. I got into hardcore by exploring Victory and Trustkill Records' back catalog since I was really into Thursday. This was when I was xSTRAIGHTxEDGExTR00xTILxDETHx . Everyone else liked The Used or Saosin around 2003-2004 ish back in highschool, I just had to be holier than thou because I listened to Youth of Today and the Gorilla Biscuits. That vibe Thursday gave off however was something that struck me more than any other band at the time so I set out looking for bands like them. Eventually, I got into Converge and Botch, found it closer to what I was looking for, content-wise and unparalleled in its intensity. In the search for bands like Converge, I ended up finding Orchid in some magazine which also had the Locust, Amanda Woodward, Das Oath, Lickgoldensky and Get Fucked in it. Ended up developing a lasting passion for stuff that's either heartwrenching or just balls to the wall intense.

Then I got into shoegazing, tweepop and C86.

Now my last.fm doesn't have loud shit anymore.
