Re: ITT: we discuss straight edge in screamo
i don't "get" straight edge?
isn't it something repressed teenagers grow out of once they turn legal?
philosophically it seems like something for AA members?
or did it come out of a reactionary movement to all the wasted idiot jackasses who fall over and break shit and ruin everyone's time and dudes were like "fuck that, i don't need to be an asshole to enjoy my clean living self"?
i'm sure there's a manifesto of sorts somewhere, maybe just link me so as i might be "informed"?

This is exactly how it started. This is what the song Straight Edge is about. Ian Mackaye was tried of drunk/high assholes at shows.buckytoole wrote: or did it come out of a reactionary movement to all the wasted idiot jackasses who fall over and break shit and ruin everyone's time and dudes were like "fuck that, i don't need to be an asshole to enjoy my clean living self"?

When I saw Ian Mackaye speak at a lecture a couple of years ago he spoke on the topic of straight edge. He said that to him drinking beer and smoking cigarettes was something he always saw adults doing and as a teenager growing up he wanted to try and be as far removed from typical american adult culture, continuing to live life free of drugs/drinking was a way for him to maintain more parts of what it is to be a child. It was for him also an individualist choice one that promotes freedom of choice. He would go to shows and everyone would be drinking, etc. but he wanted to say "hey I have a right to be here to, but I don't have to take part in that practice" alot of punks in the DC scene gave him and his group of friends alot of shit for not drinking/smoking. So straight edge is an extension of the punk idea of individuality and freedom.xdylanx wrote:This is exactly how it started. This is what the song Straight Edge is about. I think choosing to not drink/smoke/do drugs makes you somewhat of an outcast in society, it's another way of stickin it to the man, and saying "fuck your culture" it's similar to being vegan/vegetarian.
My main complaint with straight edge is that Ian was practicing clean livin and sayin fuck you to the man, whereas the youth crew style sxe crews were doing the opposite, they preached uniformity and togetherness, fuck all that. I'm in this on my own I don't want to be categorized with a bunch of anti-individualistic mosh crew sxe bros, fuck the jock club that sxe has become. I feel more at home chillin with my friends that smoke weed than hangin with sxe jocks who eat steaks and talk about football.

Re: ITT: we discuss straight edge in screamo
i've been straight edge for 17 years.
every band i've ever done people usually associate with "screamo". i'm in a straight edge band now and people sometimes categorize us as "screamo mixed with hardcore" (much like zann, i suppose).
