I've been trying to book shows with a larger spread of sub-genres. I have been booking metal bands with hardcore and screamo and fastcore. It seems like more people end up coming out and most people stick around to watch all the bands. I feel like when I'm booking a show I want it to be a good time, sometimes its a bit stale if there are 5 screamo bands on a show or 5 fastcore bands, I know I get kinda bored.

Seriously thank you. I was bitching about this just last week. We'll have diverse shows and they'll be so much fun! But then you just get genre-lumping at all the other ones. Though this spot around here called Unit B has been pretty rad. They're down to just let whoever wants to play do their thing. It's made for some pretty rad shows.

inb4 moshing is for the stupids, I started hardcore with nyhc and 90s metalcore (and a bit of da screamoz). The mosh will forever run through my veins.

New Jersey has become kind of bad for having diversity at shows. Most of the shows here stick to one genre. The only exception being that it seems like all the modern screamo or 'skramz' bands will be playing with a lot of post rock/indie bands, and everyone seems to have a good time at those shows. These shows are usually at a house called the Batcave up in Montclair. Otherwise, the tough guy band shows are usually 6 tough guy bands, all of them sound the same, say the same things between songs, etc. Most of the basement shows in New Brunswick are divided by houses. There are a couple that seem to only usually have 4 bands that all play 80's punk or thrash. some of them do it well, some of them are totally unlistenable. Another house is strictly indie bands. There's only one house here that will do any kind of show regardless of genre.

It's a really weird since I have friends who play in hardcore, punk, metal, thrash, etc bands...but we never play shows together, even though we all hang out together.

It is always funny to see ppl who are used to going to different shows eye each other at shows with a wide spread of genres, tho. Or when you get that one pop punk band playing first for a bill full of way heavy shit.
-a.k.a. every show my high school pop-punk band ever played.

NJ is super genre-divided, you're right. There's never any disrespect or anything, which is good, but I'd rather be exposed to bands of different genres in a night rather than hear different takes on the same style that I've heard time and time again.
